Press release: Now is the time for the Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno-Karabakh

ree

The agreements signed Friday at the White House by Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Aliyev are a promising step toward lasting peace in the South Caucasus. They explicitly refer to the United Nations Charter. To fulfill this requirement, the right to self-determination and the protection of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh must be preserved.

Consolidating the agreements requires a lasting solution to the decades-long Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. As long as 120,000 Armenians cannot return to their homeland, a stable peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan remains out of reach.

Now is the right time for the Swiss peace initiative. Switzerland has committed to organizing a peace forum between Azerbaijan and representatives of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh. There, a framework can be negotiated that will enable the Armenians of Karabakh to return safely and collectively to their homeland.

We call on President Trump, President Aliyev, Prime Minister Pashinyan, and all stakeholders involved in the peace negotiations to support the Swiss Peace Initiative. Together, we can lay the foundation for lasting peace and prosperity in the Caucasus.
